I always feel this sweat when photographing how we feed ourselves. So it was just over a year ago in Punjab, India, being with farmers freeing every grain of rice to sell in the market. Over and over for hours, a tarp below not to lose any precious grain. In Bangladesh a few years ago on a previous @natgeo story, I've been with a mother as she swept up fallen grains of rice after a farmer had harvested, the only food that day she would have for her children. In 1993, I saved coins to send myself to South Sudan for the war and famine. I met a grandma on her knees in Nimule, collecting each spilled bean in the dirt at a feeding center. Our existence with everyone is intertwined, each moment as one. Last night, when cooking rice, I did as always, preciously pouring rice grains from the measuring cup into a boiling pot of water, serving every piece of cooked rice, in focus not to drop one grain.
