I met so many kind people in India. Three of the many I met on motorcycles were Priyanka Devi and her partner, Roshanlan, in Prayagraj (Allahabad). When I was on the unimaginative named New Yamuna Bridge (it happens to cross the Yamuna River, and it’s new...), they stopped to say hello. One of countless random hellos to ask where I was from and to please take their picture, and a selfie. Another encounter was Bijul. A sweet, bright-eyed girl was sitting on the back of her father’s motorcycle while I was standing in a burning rice field after harvesting in Punjab. Like Priyanka Devi, she too was dressed in brightly colored clothing, and like Roshanlan, Bijul’s father wanted to say hello and to take their picture. Usually, when I make such portraits, I do out of courtesy to those asking, almost unconsciously. I was surprised days later when editing...there was something beautiful about these two pretenseless portraits. Thankful, both arriving into my life on motorcycles.
