Video by @Tim Laman and Ed Scholes. Sometimes, filming expeditions can yield surprising scientific discoveries, especially in remote places like the island of New Guinea. On our filming trips to the Arfak Mountains in West Papua a while back for the Netflix documentaries “Our Planet” and “Dancing with the Birds” we located a display site and filmed the local variety of the Superb Bird-of-Paradise displaying for the first time. This led to our documentation, especially after subsequent trips for the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, that this was a distinct species of Bird-of-Paradise, now called the Vogelkop Superb Bird-of-Paradise. If you haven’t seen the short video explaining this discovery on the Cornell Youtube channel, I’m sharing it again here. Watch on IGTV and turn your phone to see it full screen.

I find my natural history filmmaking work especially satisfying when we can make a contribution to scientific knowledge and hopefully also conservation awareness while making films that entertain and educate. That’s when it all comes together. A discovery like an unknown bird-of-paradise just shows how much more we have to learn about the biodiversity of the New Guinea region.
