Photo by @Tim Laman. A one-week-old Common Loon chick rides on its parents back in Mount Desert Island, Maine. Loon chicks are amazingly precocious and leave the nest the day they hatch and they can immediately swim. But they do spend a lot of time on mom or dad’s back, where they are safe from predators and can take lots of naps while waiting for the other parent to deliver food. Shot for the #CornellLabofOrnithology, with help from Somes Meynell Wildlife Sanctuary. Check out thier FB @somesmeynellwildlifesanctuary. #loon #maine
