Happy World Albatross Day…. provided me a splendid excuse for a dive into the archives bringing back fond memories of my ten times crossing the Drake Passage on voyages to and from Antarctica. When it was windiest I always tried to be on the back deck, hoping for a glimpse of one of the world’s most amazing birds, the Wandering Albatross. With the longest wingspan of any bird (up to 3.5 Meters = 11.6 ft), they can remain aloft for hours without ever flapping their wings, and are a true thrill to watch riding the air. Here are a few of my favorite shots – Enjoy! Sadly, while we honor the magnificence of these birds today, we also need to be reminded of the ongoing conservation crisis they face, with interaction with fishing gear being a major issue.
