Helmeted Hornbills are Critically Endangered due to hunting for making silly decorations out of their heads. Today is Endangered Species day, so I’d like to promote more awareness about this spectacular and under-appreciated bird that I have spent a lot of time documenting. The short film I made with Cornell Lab of Ornithology has won “Best Wildlife Conservation Film” at the recent International Wildlife Film Festival, and you can view it on the Cornell Lab youtube channel. The key to saving them from extinction is to stop the demand for their heads in the markets of China and some other SE Asian countries.
