After multiple attempts trying to reach the fabled city of Beleuli, on our third try, the land cruiser became stuck in the snow. We had spent three days during the winter of 2017 trying to reach what remained of this centuries-old caravanserai stop in the autonomous region of Karakalpakstan in Uzbekistan, never making it. There weren’t many pictures of what remained of Beleuli, but I had read quite a bit about its history, and it felt meaningful to include in the story. With the car tires buried deep in snow and all of us pushing to dislodge it, I could see far in the distance what appeared to be this important trading spot along the old Silk Road. The sun was setting with no more days to spare, and I ran the remaining 2 kilometres in the snow towards what looked like arches that rose above a slight incline in the landscape. When I reached Beleuli, there wasn’t much to see. All the research, effort and days to find this historic trading post was pretty much for nought, except for the brief seconds of a most beautifully unusual sunset, creating three fingers rising into the evening sky.
