There’s something sadly poetic when discovering tragedy resting in the middle of almost nowhere. What happened to this lorry? Was the driver alright? Did anyone else get hurt? What sort of heat, flame and intensity was needed to melt metal? Why do the remains of calamities feel like randomly placed pieces of art? I came upon this wreckage along a dark snowy highway in the far western Karakalpakstan autonomous region of Uzbekistan. We were trying to find the fabled city of Beleuli, a vital trading post used century ago along Silk Road caravanserai. The next day we found Beleuli, only after seeing this sadness that filled my head with thought.

johnstanmeyer @aziz_khalmuradov oh yes, my confusion...we walked the desert in June-July with Paul. i was referencing our time when we came upon the remains of this truck, which was in February 2017, during the waning days of winter

johnstanmeyer @mazzzamat actually, Paul crosses properly in the spring. it was @aziz_khalmuradov and I who, in my fascination, and available time, crossed Ustyurt in the closing weeks of winter
