Here were the kind ones I met on the small boat that crossed the Amu Darya River as we reached the sandy beach of Jumurtau village in western Uzbekistan. The winter had been heavy in 2017, and the Amu Darya was thick with ice. The floating bridge that crosses this river, once known as the Oxus, was no longer usable because of the freezing and only small rowboats could navigate the shifting ice, bringing more than 500 people each morning across, including some with bicycles, as they headed to work. Interesting how nature changes things and in reality, nothing ever changes, other than our imagination.
