Our earth's abuse…water especially…demands us to bear witness in our collective need to alter our perception, our greed, and our relationship with our natural resources. When in the Karakalpakstan autonomous region of western Uzbekistan in 2017, I went to the town of Muynak (Moynaq). Once a thriving city along the Aral Sea, today much of it is a ghost town. Why? Only a few decades ago during the Soviet era, water from the Aral was diverted to irrigate cotton fields. The water slowly vanished, reducing the world's 4th largest lake to a 10th of its size by 1997. Loosely translated, Aral means "Sea of Islands" because it had over 1,100 islands. When the water left, it decimated the fishing industry, tins that once would contain fish lay scattered upon the floor of an abandoned factory. Homes and buildings that were under construction, never finished. Large ships now rest in rusting testimony of a vibrant port. Before, the water was 10 meters (33 feet) in depth, retreading more than 200 kilometers (125 miles) from where I stood. Today, the lakebed is a barren landscape to graze cattle, a playground for local tourists taking selfies as night overcomes Muynak. Water is love. It sustains us — our life force. What we do in one place on our planet affects all of us. We are all connected, intertwined like a braid from one head of hair. And yet we act like children, who didn't listen to our mother's and fathers. Until it was too late. - #water #environment #karakalpakstan #uzbekistan #muynak #moynaq #aralsea #thearal #lake #rustingboats #selfies #cattle #abandoned #factory #homes #fishtin #activism #indoing #now #beforeitstoolate」7月21日 6時45分 - johnstanmeyer
