For World Snake Day, we bring you the rainbow boa (Epicrates cenchria)! Native to the Amazon River basin, it slithers around in humid forest and is sometimes even spotted in open savanna. It gets its unique sheen from a phenomenon known as structural coloration—on the boa, this is caused by light reflecting off of microscopic structures on its skin, giving the scales an iridescent gleam. It grows as long as 6 feet (1.8 meters) and is non-venomous; to take down prey, it ambushes and constricts.

Love the iridescence on snakes like that! And so cool to see it in its natural environment! Awesome photo!
