What is Manhattanhenge? It occurs when the setting Sun aligns precisely with the Manhattan street grid to create a radiant glow of light across the city’s brick-and-steel canyons. The phenomenon simultaneously illuminates both the north and south sides of cross streets on the grid. Any city with a rectangular grid can identify days where the setting Sun aligns with their streets—but Manhattan has a few extra features, including a clear view of the horizon and tall buildings to frame the Sun, creating a striking photo opportunity. For best effect, position yourself as far east in Manhattan as possible. But ensure that when you look west across the avenues, you can still see New Jersey. Clear cross streets include 14th, 23rd, 34th, 42nd, and 57th.
