It’s Cephalopod Week + Throwback Thursday, so we’re traveling back in time to 1957 and visiting the Museum’s Hall of Ocean Life via this old film negative! As you can see, before our iconic blue whale model was hung from the ceiling in 1969, other critters were on display. In the forefront of this image is a model of a giant squid—it was part of the original hall, which opened to the public in 1933. This elusive cephalopod can reach up to 40 feet in length and lives deep below the ocean’s surface. Today, you can still spot this giant squid model hanging in the Museum’s Hall of Biodiversity, located on the first floor!
