Did you know that the male Emperor Penguin (Aptenodytes forsteri) incubates an egg while his female partner returns to the open ocean in search of food? In the harsh Antarctic environment, a male Emperor Penguin balances the egg on his feet beneath a fold of skin, keeping it at a toasty 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius). The outside temperature can dip lower than a frigid -30 degrees Fahrenheit (-34 degrees Celsius), so he will frequently huddle together with other soon-to-be fathers for warmth. The incubation period is about 65 days, during which a male will brave the harsh Antarctic winter without eating!

I used to think that emperor penguins were these gigantic birds, but it turns out they’re only 1.1-1.3m tall.
