Behold, the orchid mantis (Hymenopus coronatus)! This master of disguise is native to the rainforests of southeast Asia, where it patiently waits for unsuspecting prey to mistake it for a flower. When pollinating insects such as bees and butterflies come close to check it out, the orchid mantis strikes. Scientists think that the bug’s camouflage is dual purpose: the flower-like appearance aids it in ambushing prey, but it also helps conceal the mantis from predators. Only females of the species resemble flowers; males are about half the size and are a greenish-brown color.
