Making its way to you is the impala (Aepyceros melampus)! Spotted in open woodlands and savannas, the impala is usually seen in groups that number up to 100. Only the males have horns, up to 36 inches long (91 centimeters), with which they fight during breeding season. The impala is a food source for a number of predators, including leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, and wild dogs; juveniles are even targeted by predatory birds. Luckily, the animal is a fast runner and can make leaps of up to 10 feet (3 meters) high and 30 feet (9 meters) long, which can be helpful in making a hasty getaway. Say “hi” to the impala in the Museum’s Hall of African Mammals.
