I wasn’t born when, in 1971, in France, The Manifesto Of The 343 Sluts (oh yes they did) was signed by 343 public women who said they had had an abortion. It was an act of civil disobedience and was written by hero Simone de Beauvoir. Some of my idols (my number one being Françoise Sagan) signed it. Sonia Rykiel did. Jeanne Moreau. Marguerite Duras.

A manifesto in which they explained how many women died trying to have an abortion in their kitchen or in the hands of greedy individuals. I know some women of a different generation who had to go through this. Want a detail just to make it graphic? One technique was using knitting needles. Yes. .

Of course the text has a very political and radical tone. But it is one of the foundations of Women’s Rights. And it’s absurd how still modern it is, almost 50 years later. .

My mother and her friends and their mothers fought for this - and the pill, and the right to vote. Because before this their whole LIFE belonged to their husbands. Their whole life belonged to society. They didn’t have the right to have a bank account. This is probably why I find is so hard to watch The Handmaid’s Tale - because it is SO REAL.

Most of us where born in freedom, taking it for granted. Let’s NEVER forget how many women fought, how many women died before us to get us there. I am profoundly shocked any time any right is taken back - the Alabama abortion law hit me profoundly. .

I am ready to raise my voice and I support @plannedparenthood - And this time around, men should stand with us and raise their voices loud and clear - and I am sure they will, because these life altering accidents don’t happen on their own. .
