You can’t tell from this photo, but when fully grown these hatchlings @wcasacramento will be easily identifiable as one of the most widespread birds in North America – the mourning dove. Every year hunters harvest more than 20 million of these birds, but despite this, the species has been able to maintain its numbers in the U.S. with a population size estimated at 350 million doves! You can help provide food and shelter for this species in your own backyard by scattering seeds, particularly millet, on the ground or on platform feeders. Planting dense shrubs or evergreen trees in your yard is also a great way to create safe nesting sites for hatchlings like these two!
