The marbled salamander, like this one @stlzoo, can be found throughout most of the eastern U.S., reaching as far north as southern New England, and as far south as East Texas. This species will spend most of its life residing in floodplains and low-lying areas dominated by hardwood trees. During drier months the salamander will remain underground, emerging in the fall to journey out of the woods in search of a nearby pond where it will mate. In recent years, amphibians across the globe, including salamanders, have been experiencing population declines. While some cases can be linked to habitat destruction and pollution, others appear to have no direct cause. These mysterious cases have yet to be solved, but long-term studies suggest that amphibian populations can naturally fluctuate widely over a period of time, with breeding populations in the thousands in some years and near zero in others. #SalamanderSaturday #marbled #salamander #spotty #mirrorimage #amphibian #photoark #savetogether
