Unlike other species of black-tailed deer, the Sitka variety is smaller and stockier, with a shorter face, giving it a distinct look. Their population tends to rise and fall throughout the year, primarily in response to winter weather and wolf and bear predation. Logging also has an impact on deer numbers as tree cover helps to reduce the impacts of winter; old-growth forests are filled with trees of different heights, which creates layers of branches that block falling snow.
