This cane toad was deliberately introduced to Australia in 1935 to control scarab beetles (which are pests of sugarcane) but it wasn’t long before the toad population grew out of control. With few natural predators and easy access to food, the cane toad has thrived. Originally numbering around 3,000, there are now several million throughout northeastern Australia! Measures have been put in place to remove the cane toad, but it's difficult to say the least. Their presence is harmful to local wildlife in a number of ways, including: ​the depletion of native species that die eating the poisonous amphibians, the decline of native species preyed on by cane toads, and reduced prey populations for native insect-eaters, such as skinks.
