The alpine chamois is native to mountainous parts of central and southern Europe and Asia Minor, where it occurs as seven different subspecies! It looks a bit like a goat, but its distinct facial colouration makes it easy to identify. Males of most hoofed species will compete in head-to-head combat with their rivals, but a fight between two male chamois isn't just for show. Chamois attack the belly and flanks of rival males with their sharp hooked horns in order to rip open their stomachs. Warriors by nature, this species is tough as nails, but poaching and over-hunting may be a threat for the species in parts of its range where it occurs outside of protected areas.
