It may be hard to believe that anything this cute could be disliked, but the European polecat wasn’t always a fan favorite. Before wire netting was created, this species was known as a fierce predator of poultry, so farmers felt that eliminating the polecat was the only way to protect their stock. This, in combination with their fur being desired for the fur trade led to this species being nearly wiped out in Britain by the end of the nineteenth century. Thankfully, there has been a change in attitude towards the polecat by farmers and foresters who now see this night-time hunter as a benefit thanks to its appetite for a variety of “pest” species like rodents and rabbits. Congrats on 1.3 million followers @joelsartore! What an inspiration you are to so many! I’m a huge fan and hope I win your contest! 😍 Here’s my entry: My two favorite animals are the barred owl and the red fox. They are so beautiful and enchanting. Examples of what I do to help save animals: I am a champion for recycling. I see the destruction plastic has had on our whole ecosystem. I work for a multimillion dollar organization that had no recycling program. I was relentless on talking to the executive team about why this is so important. Within about 6 months a recycling program was set up and implemented 🙌 Also at work, they were using glue traps and rat poison for rodent control. So awful. My heart breaks for the critters that are tortured on those glue traps and also thinking about our birds of prey being poisoned through their food source. This was a harder battle but I got there. Many people think my thoughts are a little much but I don’t care. I will always advocate for these things. Thank you again for your amazing work! @angelamatt53 @friendct follow Joel Sartore to see his amazing photography and impressive mission of creating the #photoark

I've loved animals my entire life. My favorite though is the pangolin! I had a huge book of mammals as a kid and when I saw the picture for it I fell in love instantly. When I got older, I was devastated to discover they were the most heavily trafficked animal in the world. To help save wildlife I've been reducing my plastic use, donating to a number of environmental rescue organizations, and educating myself on best practices for living with the wildlife in my community. This year I'm planning on building a bee hotel and making my backyard more toad and frog friendly! @dizylizie33 @aeberardi follow this guy, and learn about animals!

While I love all animals, I have always had a particular love for sea animals. One of my favorite animals is the sea turtle - I am especially inspired by the harrowing journey they take at the beginning of their lives from the nest into the ocean. One of the most important steps to take to help preserve their habitat is to reduce our use of plastic - I always try to use reusable water bottles and bring my own bags to go shopping. I hope @felicious_33 and @morganbj can learn about this amazing animal ark too!!

My favorite animal the African elephant, especially the ones on Namibia that slide on their butts down the sand dunes. We help protect the local animal environments by speaking out against further development in wooded areas. @alfondspond @henryandpenny - have you heard of the Photo Ark? It's an incredible effort to catalog images of ALL the animals. Check it and Joel Sartore out.

My favorite animal is the giraffe 🦒. I am working daily to help protect our environment by increasing awareness of the effects of single use plastics (bags, utensils, cups) on wildlife. I think @zoomom_246 and @atsurumi would appreciate the photo ark!

Looks like a relative of the black-footed ferret, who was also disliked by farmers in Southern Alberta. Luckily, there is a breeding program working at reintroducing them to their native habitat.
