With spikes covering nearly its entire body, the thorny devil looks a bit like a pocket-sized dragon. As fearsome as it may look, the spikes on this small lizard aren’t meant to cause harm. Not only does their spiny armor protect them from predators, it also helps them absorb water from their very dry Australian habitat. Between each spike is a moisture -attracting groove that collects water from the dew that appears on their bodies overnight. Any water that gets into the grooves is drawn to the lizard’s mouth, allowing it to suck water from all over its body! Photo taken @melbournemuseum
