Rarely flying and never migrating, kori bustards stalk the savannahs of eastern and southern Africa in search of large insects or small animals to eat. Reaching almost five feet tall and weighing nearly 40 pounds, the giant males of this species are among the heaviest of all flighted birds. During the breeding season, males will gather in a specific area and simultaneously perform their courtship displays to impress female onlookers. Unfortunately, these beautiful birds are often hunted for their meat and are also threatened by habitat loss, which has led to a decline in their numbers. On this Kori Bustard Day, share the story of this animal with others – simply raising awareness about this species can contribute to its overall protection. Photo taken @zooatl
