Like many jellyfish, the Australian spotted jellyfish can reproduce very quickly which can be both a gift and a curse. The species can recover from declines in its population rather quickly, but without natural predators like sea turtles present to keep their population size in check, numbers quickly grow out of control making them a threat to other marine species. Originally found off the coasts of Australia and Thailand, Australian spotted jellyfish began emerging off the Hawaiian Islands in 1945 and have been found in large numbers in the Gulf of Mexico since 2000. Each jellyfish can clear nearly 50 cubic meters of water filled with plankton in a single day, drastically altering food webs within their range. As a result, this species becomes a threat to many shrimp and fish species when its populations are not kept in balance by jellyfish predators. Photo taken @loroparque
