If it wasn’t for this squid’s bold stripes, it could easily be mistaken for a tasty dumpling! Known as the striped dumpling squid or pajama squid, this species is native to the southern Indo-Pacific and can be found off most coasts in Australia. During the day, this species buries itself in sand in order to hide from predators, but becomes more active at night, swimming in short bursts to go hunting. Scientists believe the pajama squid may produce a toxic mucous, and its stripes may serve as a warning sign to other species to keep their distance. If true, this species is just one of a handful of poisonous mollusks we know that call the open ocean home! Photo taken with a @NikonUSA D4 @butterflypavilion
