Photo by @stephenwilkes // A behind the scenes photo of me in 2017 on a remote island called Bass Rock, off the east coast of Scotland. Nirvana for birders, and home to one of the largest breeding areas of Northern Gannets in the world. But after 30 hours of photographing, it felt like The “Island of Dr. Moreau,” for me. The terrain, the aggressive nature of the Gannets, along with their copious guano, made for less than ideal shooting conditions. Volcanic soil and rock which would crumble when you stepped on it, made sitting almost impossible. So I stood for almost for 30 hours, balancing on rocks. I actually had a bird fly into my head during our shoot, hence the hard hat I’m wearing for protection. It was an absolutely unbelievable 30 hours of work. We had so much guano on our equipment and ourselves… it was mind-boggling. But the experience of seeing the beauty of Northern Gannets within their unique habitat off the magnificent coast of Edinburgh made well worth the effort.
