#TBT | Over the decades, #nytimes has employed dozens of photographers. But this March, to celebrate Women’s History Month, @nytarchives is showcasing the archival work of our talented women staff photographers and sharing some of their experiences on the job. This photo of a sandy, spacious, New York City beach was snapped by #MarilynnKYee one July day in 1983. It’s hard to believe that what is now Battery Park City once looked like this. The fact that it was built on landfill didn’t deter these sun-seekers, who were shot by Marilynn. Marilynn had joined #nytimes in 1977, becoming the first Asian-American staff photographer and one of 4 women staffers at the time. During Marilynn’s 37 years at The Times, she shot a wide range of subjects, including sports, culture and news. "That's the reason why I went into the newspaper business,” she told us this week, “just for the variety of different things that you could cover.” Follow @nytarchives to see more from the series.
