When I was pregnant with Mazzy, Mike and I took a trip to Paris. While we were there, we went to a Warhol exhibit in the Grand Palais. It was fantastic and we bought a poster as a souvenir. That poster sat on our credenza for 9 years with the name Warhol written across the top in bold letters. It wasn’t until I posted a picture of Harlow on Instagram with the poster in the background that everyone noticed Warhol and Harlow are anagrams. I hadn’t realized it either! So, this past weekend, when we went to the MOMA, I got to say— “Hey Harlow, remember that artist who shares all the same letters as your name? That’s who designed this cow wallpaper!” I also got to show the girls a Mondrian and say, “Hey Mazzy, remember when you got that horrible face painting that you made me wash off in the bathroom immediately after? That face painting was inspired by this artist!” Mazzy was also super excited to see Jackson Pollock’s Autumn Rhythm because it was featured in a short movie Mazzy was in when she was 18 months old. It’s also featured in the book Olivia that we have read about fourteen thousand times. Harlow was super excited to see Starry Night because there was a print of it that hung in her preschool ballet class. She told me it was just like she remembered. We also noticed some polka dot items from Yayoi Kusama in the gift shop and I told Harlow, “Remember when you went on that kindergarten field trip to a gallery covered in red polka dots and you happened to be wearing a red polka dress? These items were all inspired by her work!” It was like ART HISTORY: THE WILES EDITION. On a second note, while we were there, Mazzy and Harlow listened to the kid version of the audio tour. I listened to that version too so we would all be listening to the same thing. Ummmm... can I just say that the kid version is way less boring, much easier to digest and actually resulted in takeaways that I will remember! I am listening to the kid version audio tour at museums from NOW ON.
