In @tmagazine | First he built a set of stairs. Then he built somewhere for them to lead. Here’s the story behind one extraordinary (and totally nonessential) space in #Tangier, #Morocco. First, Jonathan Dawson built a ramshackle 3-room cottage on a hill that offered views of the Atlantic — but no electricity, roads or other urban infrastructure. He added a kitchen and plumbing and then he “bought these beautiful iron panels from a blacksmith in #Marrakesh but had no place to put them, so they were just rusting in the garden.” He had them made into stairs, which originally led to nowhere, until the property’s caretaker, Tariq Zawaoui, sourced locally quarried Moroccan stone so that Zawaoui could — with the help of a cousin and a mason — build the tower to which the steps now lead. There’s now this tiny sitting room upstairs, around 10 feet in diameter, with a brick fireplace and a small, pillow-strewn bed, custom made to fit snugly into the curved wall. The room is photographed here by @SalvaLopez. Visit the link in our profile to see more from the #TGreatsIssue.
