On Aug. 19, an indigenous leader in #Colombia named Holmes Niscué was headed to a meeting when bullets rained down on him. Niscué was shot 9 times and killed. He is not the only one who has been killed recently in Colombia. In 2016, Colombia’s government officially declared an end to more than 5 decades of civil war. But killings of the nation’s activists haven’t fallen. If anything, the killings appear to be on the rise in peacetime. Almost all the murders have taken place in regions that the country’s largest rebel group FARC abandoned after the peace deal. In their place, a mix of drug traffickers, paramilitary groups and breakaway rebel factions have taken over. In a response to written questions from The New York Times, the government called the killings “a grave phenomenon which deeply worries the president.” @historiassencillas took this photo of relatives and friends carrying Holmes’ coffin.
