“How fortunate for me that I got to play the two best Muppets? Playing Big Bird is one of the most joyous things of my life,” said Caroll Spinney. His remarkable run as #BigBird and Oscar the Grouch, 2 of the most beloved characters on TV, will end this week. Caroll, 84, is retiring after nearly 50 years on the job and more than 4,400 episodes of #SesameStreet. He was originally asked to play Big Bird as “a funny, dumb country yokel.” After a few episodes, Caroll made a suggestion to the show’s producers. “I said, I think I should play him like he’s a child, a surrogate. He can be all the things that children are. He can learn with the kids.” That had a lasting effect on Big Bird and on “Sesame Street,” where the character came to embody the tender, nurturing soul of the show. @codyo32 took this photo on #nytassignment of a bit of Caroll’s Big Bird memorabilia, a pair of the character’s legs attached to a rocking chair in his home.
