From @nytgender | “No matter what it is, I go to mum.” For #ThisIs18, our look at what it means to be 18 years old in 2018, we asked women photographers to document girls in their communities — taking the photos and conducting the interviews themselves. One question they asked was “who do you go to for advice” and around the world, a theme emerged: Mom. Hélène Françoise Philippe, a student in Los Angeles, says, “Recently I watched ‘Gilmore Girls’ and I felt like it was just talking about my life: That strong mother-daughter bond is exactly what I have. We navigate the world together.” Likewise, Faiza Al-Afifi, (pictured above) with her mom, says she has a very special relationship with her mother, who encourages her to pursue her dreams. So yes, 18 may be a rite of passage into adulthood, but one thing is for sure: You are never too old for Mom. Click on the link in our profile to learn more about This Is 18. And swipe left to meet more of the girls featured in the project. We also want to hear from you. Share a photo of yourself at 18 with the hashtag #ThisIs18 on Instagram and we'll highlight some of them. What would you say to your younger self in that photo? | Girls featured: 1. Faiza Al-Afifi (Ramallah, West Bank), photographed by Leen Awartani 2. Hélène Françoise Philippe (Los Angeles, United States), photographed by Arleigh Haskal. 3.
