From @nytgender: The UN has declared today the international #DayoftheGirl. But what does it mean to be an 18-year-old girl in 2018? What slang do they use? When did they first feel like an adult? What do they want to be doing in 5 years, when they are older? To find out, we gave women photographers around the world an assignment: Show us 18 in your community. Because, yes, 18 is an age. But it’s also something more — It’s a moment, a rite of passage, a gateway to adulthood. Introducing #ThisIs18 — a celebration of girlhood across oceans and cultures, ranging from the U.S. to Kenya to South Korea to Norway. “At this stage of my life, I sincerely don't know where my life is leading me. Though I'm sure I'll steer it,” says Lior Danieli, pictured above. She’s an 18-year-old in Be'er Sheva, Israel who just graduated high school, plays volleyball professionally and will be drafted into the Israeli military in 2019.
