Welcome to the Deni Ute Muster, a carefree weekend party in Deniliquin, Australia, where rural masculinity is on display and beer and banter flow endlessly. The festival, built around the “ute,” Australia’s beloved utility truck, was made 20 years ago to give the local economy a lift. Today, it’s become a juggernaut of rural identity: Almost 20,000 people attended last weekend. Over the years, the party has quietly evolved. This year in particular, as Deniliquin and a wide swath of the country struggle with a worsening drought, a clear issue emerged: mental health. Research shows that farmers are among those at highest risk of suicide in Australia. For many who attend, this festival has become a gathering that ignites love and combats loneliness. @abrfoto took this photo of a man in his “ute” at the festival.
