In #Amsterdam, tourism has shot up in the past decade, bolstered by low-cost flights, cheap accomodation and the ease of traveling across open European borders. However in a city where marijuana and prostitution are both largely legal, the wrong kind of tourist is doing more harm than good. Local leaders have proposed solutions to the problem, including on-the-spot fee collection for public urination, drunkenness or excessive noise, increased security and even a movement organized by residents who try to raise awareness that not everyone who comes to the Netherlands is there to drink and party. “Sometime it is as simple as tourists not realizing that real people live here,” said Edwin Schölvinck, an organizer of the group. @jasperjuinen took this photo in Amsterdam on #nytassignment.
