Senegal's majestic #baobab trees are like real-life giving trees, providing shade, gathering places, food and even tombs to people who live near them. But baobabs are in jeopardy, threatened by climate change, urbanization and population growth. Researchers say Senegal has lost half of these giants in the last 50 years due to drought and development. One of the biggest developments in the country is outside Dakar, where Senegal’s president is building an entirely new city in the middle of a baobab forest. Officials have pledged to replant any trees they tear down. “Whenever you see a baobab that has fallen down, you’re sad,” said Gorgui Kebbe, a construction worker. “It’s a symbol of our country. But having a house to live in takes priority.” @tomas.munita took this photo of 2 sisters harvesting baobab leaves in Western Senegal. Visit the link in our profile to read more.
