South Sudan is one of the toughest places for newborns to survive. The nation is in the midst of a humanitarian crisis; a brutal civil war has drained its economy, forcing hospital doors to close and doctors to flee. For many babies, their only hope is a public neonatal clinic. At the clinic, 1 in 10 newborns will die, most from treatable conditions. “Our mothers here, they come for help,” said Rose Tongan, a pediatrician. “And you pity them. You can’t do anything.” Babies often remain nameless, for their mothers know they may not make it.
