In the aftermath of storms like #HurricaneHarvey, the Coast Guard’s orange helicopters have become a sign of hope for residents trapped by rising waters: help has arrived. To better understand their search-and-rescue operations, @hlswift, on #nytassignment, accompanied one crew during its mission in North Carolina after #HurricaneFlorence, where the Coast Guard airlifted people and pets to safety. The rescue flights started at daybreak. During the day, the crew made multiple stops in Rocky Point, North Carolina, where some families struggled with the option of evacuating. By late afternoon, the pilots were out of flight time — another helicopter would help remaining residents. “Today’s been eventful,” one crew member said as they flew back to Elizabeth City, North Carolina.
