Nigerian herders are facing a serious threat to their way of life. Nigeria’s rapidly expanding population means more people want to farm on land that has been used by herders for centuries. Across parts of the country, conflicts have broken out between farmers and herdsmen, leading to bloody battles. In the first half of this year, clashes have killed about 1,300 people — 6 times the number of people killed by the Islamist extremists of Boko Haram in the same period, according to the International Crisis Group. Nigeria’s federal government has proposed setting aside land for herders, yet the country is also grappling with widespread unemployment. As a result, it is pushing more people into farming, which adds to the tensions. @adrianeohanesian took this photo of Nigerian herders loading cows into a truck.
