What does gentrification sound like? An ensemble of 6 vocalists and 18 instrumentalists seeks to answer this question through “Place,” an 80-minute performance that will obsessively mull gentrification, displacement, the powers and limitations of white male privilege and the intersection of shifts in communities and families. For about a year, the 3 artists sent one another news articles, but nothing caught fire. Then the trio recorded themselves talking about why they wanted to do the project, which turned into a crucial seed for a work that revels in uncertainty, disjointedness and grappling with widening your sense of the world. The creators of “Place,” the director Patricia McGregor (left), the composer Ted Hearne (far right) and the poet Saul Williams (center) are photographed here walking in the Fort Greene neighborhood of Brooklyn by @dedecim on #nytassignment.
