Do animals go to heaven? Rt. Rev. Clifton Daniel says that question is “above my pay grade,” but he can’t image that “their sacrifice goes unnoticed by God.” Questions like this are often brought up at the annual blessing of the animals, a ceremony meant to invoke harmony between people and nature. The blessing, which takes place at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine on the Upper West Side of New York City, has been around for 34 years. Owners arrived with camels and cows, with vipers and rodents and all sorts of house pets. Spectators or congregants brought cameras and cellphones. Animals brought their best behavior. @dina_litovsky captured these photos of this year’s blessing while on #nytassignment.
