Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety Kamchatka brown bear smiling – Whilst this might certainly look like an aggressive pose directed at us this bear was in fact just rotating his head around and pulling this face to lots of nearby bears. I simply fired off a burst of images as his head rotated past us though it’s worth noting that this is a sizeable crop, done simply because I think that this expression is interesting enough to warrant being seen close up. This bear probably was the largest bear at this location for the few days that we were there and so this might have been a display of dominance to warn other bears away from his preferred fishing spots but certain aspects about the rest of his behaviour suggest to me that it was not. Not least the fact that whilst doing this several other bears walked right past him, seemingly unconcerned about his toothy smile and nor did the rest of his body language suggest that he was in any way behaving aggressively. Interested I did actually Google this but my, to be honest cursory glance didn’t yield much and I lacked the time necessary to start trawling through countless bear behaviour research notes trying to unlock what this particular bear might have been thinking at the time. On the subject of cropping I’m not usually a bit fan of big crops as it feels to me that the integrity of the actual image captured at the time can be compromised but in these days of massive camera sensors the flexibility that they allow means that it would be foolish not to occasionally take advantage, if only so that we can enjoy at close quarters the toothy smile of a particularly large Kamchatka brown bear.
