Photo by @marcovernaschi · The word "jaguar" means "he who kills with one leap". This species is Latin America's most emblematic big cat, and the third-largest feline after the tiger and the lion. The jaguar's current range extends from Southwestern United States and Mexico across much of Central America and south to northern Argentina. Jaguar population is declining and currently estimated around 15,000 specimens. Given its historical distribution, the jaguar has featured prominently in the mythology of numerous indigenous American cultures, including those of the Maya, Aztec and Guaraní.
