Roof of the world

In childhood, the experience of reading has an incomparable flavor. For a young reader, words and stories about faraway places are not just a simple invitation to travel, but a call to a horizon laden with mysteries. Reading about such enthralling locations often then inspires a child to make a secret pact: to go to visit these places someday. Some texts seem to evoke a bygone era, conjuring up a world that now belongs to history. I am thinking, for instance, of the writings of ancient travelers or of the poems of Sa’adi. Likewise, as I discovered Eastern Turkistan, I had the impression of being immersed in the books from my childhood, and of traveling through time.
