Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety Kamchatka brown bear fishing – Apologies for the radio silence but for the last 2 weeks I’ve in the far east of Russia, on the Kamchatka peninsula leading a photographic tour for @tatraphotography. Our primary photographic species was the Kamchatka brown bear, likely a direct ancestor of the largest of all brown bears, the Kodiak. We found these bears in astonishing numbers but having only just arrived back last night having crossed eleven time zones there’s every possibility that I might struggle to make much sense. In short Kamchatka has been to date arguably the most spectacular place that I’ve ever visited and the abundance and proximity of the bears there made for some exceptional encounters. I have several thousand images to slowly trawl through but as I leave for Kenya in a few weeks it’s unlikely that these will appear in any coherent order. For now I’ll leave you with a relatively straightforward image of a bear fishing, a moment of explosive behaviour that I wasn’t fully prepared for, hence I was shooting in portrait shape. Nevertheless I was fortunate to be able to include its spectacular claws, a moment of good fortune in what were often breathless photographic encounters. At times we would have some 20 bears all around us so deciding where to point my lens at any given time was a definite challenge, especially as it was so often the case that it would be pointing at the wrong bear when something unexpected did happen.
