At that time, many hundreds of indigenous Embera had been forcibly confined to Catrú by land mines planted by left-wing ELN guerrillas seeking to block incursion by their right-wing enemies to the zone. Caught in the middle of these two warring parties, the Embera were suffering shortages of food and illnesses were spreading due to their isolation. En medio del fuego cruzado, los Emberá sufrían por la escasez de comida, y las enfermedades se estaban esparciendo a partir del aislamiento en su pueblo.
