Photo by @FransLanting Born after a gestation of nearly two years, a newborn elephant is nurtured by a close-knit family that reaches beyond its own mother to include aunts who help share the burdens of raising young. Elephants have a lengthy childhood which, just as in humans, allows for the learning needed to function properly in the complex social network that is part of being an elephant. From day one, calves are on the move, but families adjust their pace to the speed of the slowest. I photographed this young elephant and her mother in Luangwa Valley, Zambia, where the elephant population is coming back after a period of steep decline due to widespread poaching.
