Beluga Whales, Churchill, Manitoba - Photo by Kevin Schafer - @schaferpho @ナショナルジオグラフィック - In the shallow reaches at the mouth of the Churchill River, I peered down at a group of Belugas, tinted green by the murky water. As one looked up at me, it blew a string of bubbles, like a message from another world. I will never know the meaning of the gesture - most likely a simple, emphatic, “go away” - but happily they stayed around our boat for quite some time, and showed no sign of aggression or displeasure. Belugas gather in Arctic estuaries like this every summer to give birth to their young. Simply said, being in the water with them was gift. #churchillriver #belugawhales #arcticmagic
